Several tags against Renaud Payre, vice-president of the metropolis of Lyon in charge of Housing were written Wednesday evening on the facade of Sciences Po Lyon, of which he was the director from 2016 to 2021. Messages “Payre on go die” or “Payre sexist, racist” were tagged on the building, surrounded by other inscriptions against the patriarchy or the police. “These threats are inadmissible and I do not minimize them. I filed a complaint this very afternoon. I am very touched by the many messages received, I thank all those who have given me their support“said Renaud Payre in a press release released at the end of the afternoon.

On Wednesday evening, the premises of Sciences Po Lyon, located on the route of the march organized for International Women’s Rights Day, were the target of numerous tags, which had still not been erased this Thursday afternoon.

Full support from local elected officials

Very quickly, the entire Lyon political class gave its support to Renaud Payre. “I strongly condemn these threats (…) totally unacceptable“, reacted Bruno Bernard, the president of the metropolis of Lyon. “These messages of hate and threats must be fought by all Republicans“, wrote for his part the deputy of the Rhône Thomas Rudigoz (Renaissance). “All my support for Renaud Payre following these threats. Politics is a debate of ideas not successive threats“, commented on Twitter the mayor of 2e Borough Pierre Oliver (LR).

Fabienne Buccio, the prefect of the Rhône department, also condemned these registrations and supported the elected PS.

A statement of support was also released by Sciences Po students. We, students of Sciences Po Lyon, strongly affirm our support for Renaud Payre. Such a threat to his workplace is shameful. Such a threat on the walls of an institution of higher learning is despicable. This attack cannot go unanswered. We urge our Institute of Policy Studies to prosecute this offender hidden under cowardly anonymity“, they wrote in particular.
