Macaroni and Cheese – with only 3 ingredients

Having a hard day? Then you are definitely longing for soul food that gives you security – warm, creamy and spoonful … Americans know what helps in such cases: a good portion of macaroni and cheese. The creamy cheese noodles, affectionately also called "Mac and Cheese", are among the most popular ready meals in the USA. Maybe because you don't have to stand in the kitchen for long after work …

Ready-to-eat food is hard to get in Germany – but you can do it without it: after all, we can easily make Macaroni and Cheese ourselves, even without the preservatives, colors and flavors that are in the original Macaroni and Cheese.

We were convinced by the recipe that Kristen presents in her blog "Ella Claire": with only three ingredients – pasta, cheese and milk – and the meal is ready in just seven minutes.

Ingredients for a portion of macaroni and cheese:

  • 1/3 cup macaroni
  • 1/3 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 dash of milk

Prepare macaroni and cheese

  1. Place the macaroni in a microwave-safe large mug (or small bowl) and fill the mug with water. Not quite full, otherwise it boils over!
  2. Six minutes a day microwave boil, stir with four, two and one minute remaining. Depending on the microwave, you have to add some water. In the end, the pasta should be cooked and the water should have almost evaporated.
  3. Add the cheese and let it melt in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds. Add a dash of milk and stir well.

Tips for Mac and Cheese

  • If you like, season the Macaroni and Cheese with salt and pepper.
  • Kristen makes her Macaroni and Cheese with whole grain pasta, but if you don't like them, you can use other pasta.
  • Tastes great not only with macaroni, but also with penne, Fussili or other short types of pasta.
  • Instead of cheddar, you can take any other favorite cheese from Gouda to Emmentaler. You can also experiment with a mix of several cheeses!
  • If you don't have a microwave, you can of course make the Macaroni and Cheese in a pot – it only takes a little longer.
