While mermaids loll around in the water and elves and fairies scurry across the grounds, Roland Mack (71) strolls relaxed over the brand new facility from Rulantica – the imposing water world now also has an outdoor area. The good piece is called Svalgurok. With 1500 loungers, slides and plenty of space to splash around for young and old.
“A few months ago it was just corn fields, and today Germany’s largest water playground is here,” says the park patron proudly to Blick. At the opening, the sun bangs down from the sky like rarely in the year: 26 degrees. And Mack quickly steps into the water with shoes and jeans: “It couldn’t be nicer. We are all just overjoyed that after the Europapark we can also open Rulantica – and at the same time present our guests with a new attraction! “
Big investments despite heavy losses
The water world had to close twice because of Corona – now the third opening. The Mack family had tough months. A roller coaster ride of emotions.
And: Corona means there is a lack of money in the till. Lot of money. Around 300 million euros, the equivalent of 329 million francs. However, no savings were made. On the contrary, a new outdoor area was planned and finally built for Rulantica. The family has invested heavily. Couple of millions. How much exactly is a trade secret.
While the new outdoor area was being built, a sophisticated Corona security concept was being worked on together with the German University of Freiburg. At the same time there were negotiations with the authorities. The big goal: open, but safe. The effort pays off. The Europapark is already open. Now the huge water world follows. “We have invested a lot of time and money to make our systems absolutely safe.” The measures are taking effect: signs on the walls and on the floor, employee training, a limited number of guests.
Pioneer and role model Europapark
The Europapark should be a role model and show that parks can also open safely. “Last year we had over two million guests and practically hardly a single Corona case.” No wonder, because only those who have been tested, vaccinated or recovered are allowed to visit Europapark or Rulantica.
Important for the tests: They must not be older than 24 hours. And: self-tests are not accepted. However, there are several test centers in the area around the amusement park. The Europapark also has one. The tests are free for Germans, Swiss pay around 20 francs.
Have fun and forget about Corona
Mack is particularly pleased that the water world is now allowed to open after the Europapark. Of course it wasn’t. “You can’t wear a mask in the water. That is why there is no obligation to wear a face mask in the hall or outside ”, says the park boss.
To ensure that the guests are still safe, the air inside is replaced every two hours. In addition, the tickets are limited. «Lots of space, few guests, plus the measures. I think there is probably no safer place than the Europapark », said the head of the family. The announcement is clear: Anyone who comes to Europapark should have fun – and forget about Corona for a few hours.
