Named after a California wine region, the new MacOS Sonoma operating system for Apple computers deploys all its features to boost productivity and creativity, not to mention entertainment, with a slightly more assertive “gaming” vocation.
The first feature highlighted by the Cupertino company is the presence of new screensavers from shots of various places in the world. Once the computer is running, these screen savers can discreetly turn into wallpaper. If this is not the most interesting feature, it has the merit of improving the user experience, the Apple brand’s real workhorse.
New widgets are also appearing and they are now able to adapt to the wallpaper or to fade when launching another application. In addition, they obviously benefit from their integration into the Apple ecosystem, allowing them to be used without interruption from a Macbook, an iPhone or an iPad.
Productivity for professionals
For Internet users using their Mac computer for personal and professional purposes, it will now be possible to separate profiles in Safari, making it possible not to mix tabs, history, extensions and passwords.
Video conferencing enthusiasts are also pampered with new features for displaying the presenter and screen sharing overlay. In addition, MacOS Sonoma adds 3D effects that react thanks to gesture detection, to display fireworks, hearts or confetti. If not professional, it’s fun.
Apple bets on gaming
Finally, MacOS Sonoma is an opportunity for the brand to introduce a new mode dedicated to video games. Like Windows, MacOS is adorned with a game mode that mobilizes CPU and GPU resources to allocate them to the game and thus maximize performance.
This Game Mode should also improve the latency of peripherals such as Xbox or Playstation controllers as well as audio headsets.
What devices are compatible with macOS Sonoma?
As usual, Apple provides a long software follow-up for its products. Thus, many computers of the brand will be able to benefit from the update to MacOS Sonoma.
Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and Mac Mini since 2018 will be able to switch to the new operating system, the same for iMac and Mac Pro since 2019. Sonoma will also be available for iMac Pro since 2017 and of course for Mac Studio since 2022 .
