PARIS, Oct 28 (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday, for the first time since his appointment on Tuesday, the services of the Elysee Palace and the 10 Downing Street.
Emmanuel Macron expressed his desire to “deepen the bilateral relationship between France and the United Kingdom, particularly in the fields of defence, strategic affairs and energy”, while a Franco- British is scheduled for 2023, said the Elysée.
The French president and the head of the British government “also said their determination to cooperate in the face of common challenges”, such as the war in Ukraine and its consequences or the fight against global warming, indicated the services of the French presidency.
According to Downing Street, the two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation between Paris and London in order to make “totally impossible” illegal crossings of the Channel, a source of recurring tension between the authorities of the two countries.
