French President Emmanuel Macron pleaded on Tuesday at a regional conference in support of Iraq for this country, under Iranian influence, to embark on a path other than that of a “model dictated from outside”. This summit, which brings together around Iraq and France the main players in the Middle East, aims to defuse the crises that are shaking the region.

French President Emmanuel Macron pleaded on Tuesday at a regional conference in support of Iraq for this country, under the influence of Iran, to embark on a path other than that of a “model dictated by outside”. “I want to tell you France’s attachment through its history, its diplomatic action (…) for the stability of the region (…) so that there is a path which is not that of a form of hegemony, of imperialism, of a model that would be dictated from the outside,” he said at the “Baghdad II” summit on the shores of the Dead Sea in Jordan.

This summit, which brings together around Iraq and France the main players in the Middle East, including Iran and Saudi Arabia at loggerheads, aims to defuse the crises that are shaking the region. “Iraq today is the theater of influences, incursions, destabilizations which are linked to the whole region”, added the French president without ever mentioning Iran which was represented at the conference by its chief of Hossein Amir-Abdollahian diplomacy.

“Regional destabilization”

With pro-Iranian parties dominating the Parliament in Iraq and a government resulting from this majority, Iran is consolidating its grip on its neighbor, to the chagrin of the United States.

The region is “still crippled by blockages, divisions, interference, security issues and undoubtedly Iraq, taking into account the last decades, is one of the main victims of this regional destabilization”, continued Emmanuel Macron . “The region has everything to succeed in a regional and global agenda, but we must collectively manage to go beyond the divisions of the moment,” he insisted.
