Macron’s dismissal: LFI text about to pass a stage in the Assembly

A proposal to impeach Emmanuel Macron put forward by LFI should, barring any surprises, pass a first stage on Tuesday in the Assembly, with socialist deputies deciding on Monday to support holding a debate, while warning that they would ultimately vote against the text.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., the bureau of the National Assembly, its highest executive body, will meet to study seven items on its agenda. The penultimate one will be the most scrutinized: should the bureau send to the Law Commission a proposal to impeach the President of the Republic, supported by LFI and signed by 81 deputies. The body, chaired by the incumbent Yaël Braun-Pivet (EPR), has 22 deputies-members, with a small majority for the New Popular Front (12 members).

On Monday, after three hours of debate, the PS group decided that its three representatives on the board would support the admissibility of the LFI proposal, a priori paving the way for the text to pass this stage.

An initiative that does not have unanimous support on the left

The first in a long series for a procedure that is difficult to adopt, which would require the approval of two thirds of the parliamentarians of the Assembly and the Senate, meeting in the High Court. However, the parliamentarians of the centre and the right have few reasons to support this initiative, while the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister puts them back at the heart of the political game.

The text of the Insoumis states in particular that Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to appoint Lucie Castets, NFP candidate, to Matignon constitutes “a serious breach of the duty to respect the will expressed by universal suffrage”, noting that the left-wing alliance came out on top in the legislative elections (193 seats).

And the initiative is not unanimous on the left. The socialists have warned that they will vote against the text, acknowledging a strategic divergence with LFI, while the two forces intend to embody leadership.

The PS deputies consider the procedure doomed to “failure” and therefore believe that it risks “giving new legitimacy” to Emmanuel Macron. A speech rejected by the president of the LFI group Mathilde Panot who considered it “entirely possible” to have it adopted. The Insoumis also intend to increase the pressure and call on public opinion to witness, its elected representatives eagerly relaying a petition whose counter displayed more than 305,000 signatures on Monday evening.
