Streaming services are in great demand internationally, including in Germany. However, a study now shows that series fans in this country give productions made in Germany a wide berth.
While the Sunday “Tatort” is still a fixed tradition for large parts of the population, more and more film and series fans are turning away from German programs. “Made in Germany” is now less of a seal of quality and more of a warning, at least for users of streaming services.
Even if streaming productions like “Die Discounter” or “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)” have clearly hit a nerve and are constantly being extended, they remain an exception. A new study shows how great the disinterest of Germans in their own German-language productions really is.
US titles are ahead
The European Audiovisual Observatory examined how many European productions are represented in the programming of streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Co. The average value was 31 percent, while almost half of the streaming offers consist of US productions.

The study, which you can find here in its entirety, also went into more detail about the individual EU countries and their own productions. Here Germany set two records. No other European country sees so much US content relative to supply, and nowhere else has so few regional productions streamed.
Although 18 percent of the German streaming offering consists of German films and series, they are only responsible for 8 percent of German streams. It’s no surprise that Sky and Paramount+ are now refraining from producing their own German productions.
