Maëlys case: the surreal exchange of the president with Lelandais

The trial of Nordahl Lelandais for the murder of little Maëlys, in 2017, was the scene of a surreal exchange between the defendant and the president of the Assize Court of Isère.

At the helm Friday morning, Anouchka, 29, hairdresser, last companion of Nordahl Lelandais. On the night of the wedding when little Maëlys disappeared, on August 27, 2017, Lelandais sent Anouchka an SMS to which the young woman did not respond. Lelandais wants to have sex with her. She sleeps.

Friday at the hearing, the president heard a telephone tap, dated October 14, 2017. Lelandais is in detention:

Him: “Honey, are you holding up?”
Her: “It swells me not to know (about the disappearance of Maelys), that they take my head.”
Him: “It’s almost over. Do you still doubt me?”
Her: “Did you talk to her, when you were little?”
Him: “I turned on the screen, she saw the dogs and asked me if I had any dogs. That’s all. I’m going back to my closet, I don’t see anyone. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that everything is fine. I’m being accused of something crazy. If you had replied to the text, it would have changed everything, damn.

You have free will, I don’t understand the link you are making.

To the president who asks her to clarify the meaning of this last sentence, Nordahl Lelandais replies: “If I had gone to see her, I would have left the wedding, the little one would be alive, there would not have been this drama. The President, specifying that the defendant will be questioned later on these facts, replies: “You have free will, I do not understand the link you are making”. Lelandais repeats: “If she had answered the message, I would have slept at her house, I would have left the wedding.”

Me Rajon, the lawyer for Maëlys’ mother, then cites a report in which Anouchka asks Lelandais what he did on the weekend of the wedding. “Nothing special,” he replies. On August 31, three days after the wedding, Anouchka goes to Lelandais at 8:30 a.m. He doesn’t talk to her about the wedding, about the wanted girl. It is natural. They have a quick sexual intercourse, think of having a second one, but the arrival of the gendarmes will interrupt this project.

Nothing touches Lelandais

A second listening is broadcast in court, listening dated March 6, 2018, a month after Lelandais admitted the facts. He is being held in a psychiatric unit. “I tried to call you several times, you didn’t answer. Don’t listen to the media,” he said before asking her about her request for a visit permit:

Her: I don’t have the right because it’s a murder, I’m not part of the family.
Him: Well you want to marry me?
Her (annoyed): Yeah, you’re right!

Me Boguet, lawyer for the father of Maelys, deciphers: “Nothing touches Lelandais, nothing reaches him. He manipulates consciences and no doubt his own”, he told us after hearing Anouchka. At the bar, evoking Lelandais’ confessions, Anouchka will conclude, wiping away her tears: “I hope I’m wrong, but I think he won’t say more.”
