The release of mafia boss Giovanni Brusca (64) causes head shaking, especially among Italian politicians. This is unacceptable and a shame for the whole country, says Rome’s Cinque-Stelle mayor Virginia Raggi (42). Lega boss Matteo Salvini (48) writes on Twitter: “That can not be justice.”
In 1996 the mafia boss from Sicily was caught after four years on the run and sentenced to life imprisonment. Now, 25 years later, he has dismissed it.
Enemies are wiped out
Brusca was convicted of the murder of public prosecutor and mafia hunter Giovanni Falcone († 53) as well as his wife and three bodyguards. The group was killed by a bomb while driving to Palermo. Brusca had pressed the trigger during this act.
One year after the bomb attack on the public prosecutor, the Sicilian and accomplices kidnapped the then eleven-year-old Giuseppe di Matteo, whose father was considered a Mafia key witness.
The mafia held the boy prisoner for a good two years before Brusca killed him and dissolved his body in hydrochloric acid.
“Morally this is impossible to accept”
Is the dismissal of such a dangerous person reasonable? Italy’s politicians are now asking themselves that.
Since Brusca has now served his sentence, he has to be released according to the legal requirements. Nevertheless: “Morally this is impossible to accept,” says Mara Carfagna (45), Minister for Regional Cooperation. (une)
