Magic formula under pressure – survey: majority wants changes in the Bundesrat – News – SRF

  • A majority of the population would like the composition of the Bundesrat to be different.
  • This is shown by a representative survey by the Sotomo research institute commissioned by “NZZ am Sonntag”.

According to this, 59 percent of those surveyed are “rather” or “clearly” in favor of a change in the party-political composition of the government. The magic formula that grants the three largest parties, SVP, FDP and SP two seats and the fourth largest party, the centre, one seat, seems unpopular.

Unsurprisingly, voters for the Greens and Green Liberals who are not represented in the Bundesrat are the most supportive of change (91 and 85 percent, respectively).

The data collection took place between January 24th and 26th, 2023. 1,558 voters from German- and French-speaking Switzerland took part.
