Magnitude 3 – Lower Austria: Light earthquake recorded near Gloggnitz

A slight earthquake occurred in the Gloggnitz area (Neunkirchen district) on the night of Whit Monday. The tremors at 2:23 a.m. reached a magnitude of 3, reported the Austrian Seismological Service (GeoSphere Austria).

The earthquake was clearly felt in the vicinity. According to the earthquake service, earthquakes of this magnitude can occasionally cause minor damage. The region of the southern Vienna Basin is often the scene of mostly minor earthquakes. On March 30, 2021, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 occurred in the Neunkirchen area. This was classified as the strongest in the Vienna Basin in the past 20 years. Since March 30 of this year there have been repeated slight earthquakes in the Gloggnitz area.
