(Reuters) – A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck off Taiwan’s eastern coast early on Sunday, the island’s meteorological office said, adding that the tremors felt were minor.

The quake’s epicenter was in the sea off Taitung County at a depth of 16.5 km, the weather bureau said.

Only minor shaking was reported in the county, a mostly rural region. The earthquake was not felt in the capital Taipei.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
