Making detergents yourself is not a high art! You only need a few ingredients and a little time. We’ll show you how to do it step by step.

Sustainability can be easily integrated into everyday life. On the one hand, household remedies are often sufficient for cleaning, so that we can do without chemical cleaners, and on the other hand, a lot can be made by ourselves, and we save plastic waste and maybe even a few euros! You can make your own laundry detergent with just a few ingredients! We’ll show you two simple options for your DIY detergent.

Make detergents yourself – ingredients and materials

You need these ingredients:

  • 20 grams of curd soap
  • 20 grams of gall soap
  • 4 tbsp washing soda (also known as “pure soda”)
  • 4 tbsp citric acid
  • 3 liters of water
  • as desired: 5 drops of essential oil

Other materials:

  • Glass bottle or an alternative detergent container
  • Big bowl
  • Whisk
  • Kitchen grater

Make detergents yourself – the easy way to prepare:

  1. The curd soap and the gall soap with one Grate the kitchen grater and mix with the soda in a bowl.
  2. Add 1 liter of water and add the boiling water to the mixture.
  3. Stir vigorously until the soap has dissolved.
  4. Let cool down.
  5. The crowd should now have one pudding-like consistency to have. Now add a second liter of boiling water and stir vigorously again.
  6. After cooling down the add third liter and stir again vigorously this time.
  7. Slowly add the four tablespoons of citric acid and, if you like, essential oil.
  8. Again to let it cool down and pour into your empty container.

Tips for making

The production of the detergent is therefore very simple. And you can do it like any other in yours Washing machine use. Sometimes it is recommended to add vinegar to the laundry as a rinse aid. Be careful with this, however, as the vinegar may damage the seals on your washing machine. So: never add undiluted to the machine. Citric acid is particularly advisable for very hard water. However, it also has a slightly bleaching effect, so it is particularly suitable for white laundry. Lemon, jasmine or lavender have proven themselves as oil fragrances – or whatever you like.

Make detergents yourself in powder form

If you’d rather go with Washing powder instead of liquid detergent you can easily modify the recipe:

  • 100 grams of curd soap
  • 150 grams of soda
  • 150 grams of baking soda
  • approx. 100 grams of citric acid (powder)
  • as desired: essential oils

This is how fast it is to make washing powder:

  1. Finely grate curd soap.
  2. Mix the ingredients together.
  3. Put the powder in an airtight container.
  4. Use in the machine as usual.

In order to wash as environmentally friendly as possible, it makes sense not to turn on a machine for just three parts and also to choose the right temperature. Also think about how much detergent you really need for the amount of washing and use it carefully.
