Make glue yourself: this is how it works

Handicrafts are fun for children. As a parent, you should make sure that the glue is non-toxic … your fingers can quickly get into your mouth! Therefore, it is best to make the craft glue yourself – it's very easy and you only need a few ingredients!

Make glue from cornstarch

You need:

  • 55 grams of cornstarch
  • 0.5 liters of water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar (light) Warning: do not use vinegar essence
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Utils:

  • pot
  • Whisk
  • Mason jars

That's how it's done:

  1. Bring the water to a boil. Add the vinegar and salt and stir well.
  2. Then stir in the cornstarch well so that no lumps form. Keep stirring until the liquid becomes liquid and looks like milk.
  3. Do not stop stirring and let everything simmer until a viscous mass forms at the end.
  4. Pour the hot mass into clean mason jars and close them immediately. This creates a vacuum and the glue lasts longer.

Tip: If the glue is too tight for you when you are doing handicrafts, you can dilute it with a little water.

Make glue from flour yourself

It's hard to believe, but you can also make a glue very easily from wheat flour and water. That's how it works:

  1. Put two tablespoons of fine wheat flour (type 405) in a small bowl and add equal parts of lukewarm water.
  2. Keep stirring until the mixture has the desired consistency and is free of lumps.

Application tips:

  • If you want to spread the adhesive over a large area, use more water – this makes it more fluid. A pulpy consistency with a little less water, on the other hand, is suitable for precise application.
  • Depending on the room temperature, it takes between one and four hours to dry on the surface.
  • If you have a lot of craft glue z. For example, if you need paper mache, use equal parts flour and water and stir the mixture in a large bowl. B. with a hand blender.
  • This simple glue sticks perfectly to paper, cardboard or untreated wood. It can also be removed with warm water.
  • This adhesive can only be used immediately after mixing. In a sealable container, however, it will keep for several days in the refrigerator.

Glue made from flour and sugar

You need:

  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 200 ml of water

Utils:

That's how it's done:

  1. Put all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir them thoroughly with the whisk.
  2. Heat the mass slowly, stirring constantly. As soon as the mass becomes translucent, the glue is ready.

Durability: The glue will keep for up to three months in a jar in the refrigerator.

Make glue from gummy bears yourself

You need:

  • 10 gummy bears (with gelatine)
  • 2 tbsp water

Utils:

  • pot
  • A small bowl for a double boiler

That's how it's done:

  • Put the gummy bears in a small bowl and place them in the pot in the water bath.
  • Add the water and melt the gummy bears very slowly (the mixture must not boil).
  • As soon as a liquid mass has formed, you can apply the glue directly. But be careful: don't nibble yet – the glue is still hot!
