In the run-up to Christmas, mulled wine is a welcome warmth of the soul. The warm drink is not only popular at the Christmas market. You can also prepare the delicious Christmas drink at home in no time at all.

Mulled wine belongs to the Christmas season like the glittering chain of lights on the Christmas tree. When the sweet orange slices and aromatic cinnamon go into the pot with the wine and the few ingredients become the traditional hot drink, enjoyment and a contemplative mood are guaranteed.

Make mulled wine yourself: red wine, white wine and rosé wine are suitable

Homemade mulled wine is not only tastier, it is often of higher quality and even healthier. Because you can decide for yourself how much sugar to add to wine, spices and orange slices. Dry types of wine are best suited, as the hot drink is additionally enriched with sweetness. You are free to decide whether you want to prepare a white mulled wine, the classic red or even a rosé mulled wine.

Be sure to choose a good quality organic wine. Instead of sugar, honey or agave syrup can be used for sweetening. The following applies here: Try what you like best. With a fine rosé mulled wine, apple slices are also ideal as a garnish instead of oranges.

Make mulled wine yourself: the ingredients

  • 2 organic oranges
  • 3 capsules of cardamom
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 30 grams of sugar
  • 1 bottle of organic wine

Make mulled wine yourself: the preparation

  1. Finely grate the peel of an orange and then squeeze out the juice. Cut the remaining orange into slices.
  2. Press the cardamom pods on with the back of a knife and put them in a saucepan with the cinnamon sticks, cloves and sugar.
  3. Add the orange zest, juice and the orange slices to the spices. Pour on the wine.
  4. Heat the spicy wine slowly over a low temperature. The mulled wine must not boil. Let the hot drink boil down for about an hour so that the spices can develop their full aroma.
  5. Pour the mulled wine through a fine sieve and collect the spices. Serve in cups and garnish with the orange slices if you like.

These spices belong in the mulled wine

There are now ready-made mulled wine-spice mixes in the supermarket. However, you can choose the aroma yourself with fresh ingredients and thus give the drink your own note. Cinnamon, cardamom and cloves are the usual spices for traditional mulled wine. Tip: Also take a vanilla pod, halve it lengthways and add the scraped out vanilla pulp to the winter drink.
