Make-up in summer: the best tips

Boah, it's hot! So off to the lake or under the sprinkler … Whether your waterproof mascara really can stand it? You can get answers to these and other summer make-up questions here – so that your look doesn't go swimming even at 38 degrees.

Foundation and heat: not a perfect match, is it?

It depends: Basically, lighter, less opaque consistencies are better in summer so that the skin underneath doesn't sweat anymore. And since care plus sun protection plus make-up creates a very thick layer, combination products such as tinted moisturizing or BB creams are worthwhile. Or you add UV protection (e.g. "Sun Drops SPF 50" by Barbara Sturm, 30 ml approx. 125 euros).

So that the make-up doesn't wrinkle: Wait until the products underneath are well absorbed, or dab off any residues with a facial tissue, then apply as thinly as possible and press them on with your fingers, this will make it better bond with the complexion.

How often can I powder oily skin?

It is best not to use any powder at all – that makes it look chalky quickly. Rather put a matt base under the make-up (e.g. "Primed and Poreless +"). If there is still shine, "blotting paper" or facial tissues help – both look like blotting paper.

Tip from Philipp Verheyen, make-up artist L’Oréal Paris: "If the make-up has wrinkled, I press a dampened beauty blender onto the spots and everything will fit again."

How do I get the lipstick out of the way?

The following applies to make-up products: the more waxed, the more water-resistant. Therefore, matt, not too creamy lipsticks stick longer than a gloss. "To increase the durability, first paint the entire lip with lip liner," advises make-up artist Jeannette Johansson.

Your favorite is of the creamy variety? After applying the make-up, put a facial tissue on your lips and dust some transparent powder on it – that fixes a little.

How do I freshen up sunscreen when I wear makeup?

Transparent UV sprays are good for this (eg "Moisturizing protective spray for the face SPF 50" from Garnier Ambre Solaire, 75 ml approx. 12 euros). Or a make-up cushion with light protection (eg "Everlasting Cushion Foundation" from Clarins, approx. 41 euros).

Is waterproof makeup really waterproof?

There are no binding regulations that decorative cosmetics have to meet in order to adorn themselves with the claim "waterproof" – the manufacturers test on their own responsibility.

If you want to be on the safe side: Before the next sweaty action, test over the sink how much moisture the new mascara can withstand.

I need an effectively covering foundation, but my complexion should look summery: how can I get both?

The trick: Instead of going all out, only work partially, i.e. only cover redness, pigment spots and eye shadows – with foundation or, for more punch, with concealer.

"But it is particularly important that the tone hits the skin," says make-up artist Philipp Verheyen. "For the right undertone, hold a white paper next to your face and see whether the complexion looks more yellowish, that is, warmer, or reddish, that is, cooler. Then testing the appropriate nuances on the neck is the most neutral in color. And if possible to bring it to light. "

Waterproof kohl pencils get so fast when applied, is there a trick?

Because of their waxy consistency, the products do not remain creamy for long.

Good alternative: "A waterproof eyeliner is easier to do if you moisten the eyeliner brush with a 'sealer' beforehand. This liquid ensures that make-up does not run after drying," explains make-up artist Jeannette Johansson (eg "Cake Eye Liner Sealer").

Is also possible: Instead of drawing an eyeliner, dab waterproof eyeshadow in nude tones with your finger.

Which brow gel can best cope with sweats?

During photo shoots in the water, brows are often shaped with toupee glue …

An everyday tip: choose consistencies that are as waxy as possible, for example in pencil form or as so-called brow butter (approx. 12 euros, backstage-make-up.de)

Waterproof mascara, sunscreen … And how do I get it all down?

Ideally with an oil-based make-up remover – leave soaked pads on the skin so that the product can take effect and solve everything better. Then remove oil and dirt residues with a mild cleaning foam.

How can I prevent the concealer from becoming independent in the heat?

The firmer a product is, the better it adheres – and stays where it belongs. So it makes sense to switch to less fluid consistencies now. Super are z. B. Sticks – by the way, also for blushes and bronzers. It gets even more durable with a base underneath and a fixing spray over it. However, the latter often contains alcohol, which can dry out the skin in the long run.
