Making a baby, a scientific adventure? At the Festival du Monde, pregnancy under the microscope

800,000 is the number of babies born in France each year. For the majority of women, pregnancy and childbirth proceed without complications. However, the monitoring and management of deliveries are characterized by a strong medicalization, sometimes to the detriment of the preferences of women and the couple, some of whom advocate the all natural. Without an epidural, without a doctor, at home… Between the necessary medical supervision of increasingly high-risk pregnancies and the obstetrical violence denounced on social networks, how to find a balance that suits everyone?

Whatever your background, having a child means asking yourself a lot of questions. Many couples resort to medically assisted procreation (MAP). How far should we go in prenatal or even preconception examinations, which allow an increasingly detailed knowledge of the baby before birth? Journalists Sandrine Cabut and Pascale Santi will discuss these topics with France Artzner, co-president of the inter-associative collective around birth (Ciane), Valerie Koubi, medical biologist qualified in medical genetics, Clemence Schantz, midwife and sociologist, and Yves Ville, head of the maternity department at the Necker hospital.

These questions around pregnancy sound all the more like challenges as maternity hospitals are going through an unprecedented crisis, with a crucial lack of personnel, in particular midwives. A daily life that we will tell Anna Roy, midwife, columnist on the show “The Kindergarten House” and creator of the podcast “wise girl”.
