A worker from the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was kidnapped in Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, AFP learned on Tuesday, December 20 from police sources and from a local elected official. The NGO MSF, contacted on Tuesday by AFP, did not wish to react officially to this information for the moment.
“On (Monday) December 19 around 02:00 (GMT and local), an MSF worker was kidnapped by armed men in a district of Gao“, told AFP a Malian police source. The kidnapped person is from an African country, according to the same source, which did not give further details.
Serious security crisis
The information on the kidnapping was confirmed to AFP by another police source and an elected official from the city of Gao. Witnesses to the kidnapping were heard by the police and “everything is done to find the aid worker“, told AFP the first police source. “The kidnapped worker (is) an MSF logistician in Gao“said the second police source. Of the “efforts (are) underwayfor the release of the kidnapped MSF agent, said the Gao elected official.
