Malian junta promulgates new electoral law

BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali’s ruling military junta promulgated a new electoral law on Friday, a precondition for the holding of elections demanded by ECOWAS, the regional bloc of West African states, to restore the power to civilians.

For months, the soldiers who seized power in Bamako in two successive coups, in August 2020 and May 2021, have been subject to severe sanctions by the Economic Community of East African States. West.

She regretted that the junta had decided in early June to extend the transition to civilian rule by 24 months, until March 2024, and continued to negotiate to agree on “a mutually agreed timetable”.

A new summit of ECOWAS heads of state is due to take place on July 3.
