Mallorca: authorities tough! In parts of Palma there is now a two-week lockdown

The Mallorcan authorities are sealing off parts of the island's capital Palma de Mallorca due to the increased number of corona infections. The lockdown will come into effect on Friday at 10:00 p.m. CEST and will apply for at least two weeks, the regional government of the Spanish island announced on Thursday.

Almost 23,000 of the 416,000 inhabitants of Palma are affected by the exit restrictions in the popular holiday resort.

Lockdown in Palama de Mallorca: Only for work outside the home

The regulation applies to four districts outside the historic center. People are only allowed to leave their neighborhoods to go to work, school or to the doctor. They are allowed to move freely within the cordoned off area, but the authorities appealed to the residents to leave their houses and apartments only for compelling reasons.

Gyms and parks have to close. Bars, restaurants and cafes are only allowed to offer half of their usual seats and must also close at 10 p.m. Meetings are limited to five participants.

At the beginning of September, the number of infections in the four densely populated neighborhoods had risen to 496 per 100,000 inhabitants – almost three times the number for the entire island of Mallorca.
