Man kills father and fatally injures cyclist while escaping

EA fugitive, who is said to have previously killed his father, hit four cyclists with a car in Mannheim. A 71-year-old cyclist was fatally injured. Three other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, police and prosecutors reported on Sunday evening.

The 36-year-old suspect is accused of killing his 69-year-old father in Ellerstadt in Rhineland-Palatinate shortly after 6 p.m. The alleged perpetrator then fled in a car before the police arrived.

In Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, he collided with four cyclists. After the serious accident, the man fled again – this time on foot. He then jumped into the adjacent Rhine.

Motive unclear

“The man, who was probably in a mental state of emergency, was finally arrested by police forces,” the investigators reported. As a police spokesman told the German Press Agency late in the evening, there was initially no evidence that the crimes could be politically motivated.

A helicopter and a boat from the water police were in action. According to the announcement, it will now be further investigated.

The scene of the accident on Mannheim’s Rhenaniastrasse was cordoned off over a large area on Sunday evening.
