Maneskin’s Damiano David did not use drugs. The European Broadcasting Union has now received a corresponding test result.

This should end all speculation: Damiano David (22), the singer of the Italian rock band Maneskin, which won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), did not take any drugs. This emerges from a test, the result of which is available from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). A statement said: “There has been no drug use in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed.”

That was what happened

The EBU explains that the video material at hand had been looked at closely and that David’s voluntary drug test was negative. On British breakfast television in the program “BBC Breakfast”, the singer had previously responded to the allegations again on the morning of May 24th.

As he had already explained at a press conference, guitarist Thomas Raggi broke a glass that the singer leaned towards during the show. In the live broadcast, however, it looked to some viewers as if David might have sniffed cocaine from a table. The EBU later confirmed that broken pieces had actually been found.

The band also stated several times that David would voluntarily undergo a drug test. According to the EBU, the band asked for a corresponding test shortly after the ESC, but it could not be organized at such short notice.

The drug allegations were “really hurtful,” said David in an interview with the “BBC”. He spoke of “egregious” allegations. Bassist Victoria De Angelis also added that the claims saddened the band as the group wanted to convey a “positive message”.
