A plane disappears after 5 years of absence and its passengers have not aged a bit. This was the starting point for Manifest, an intriguing series that made us think in many ways of Lost. It ended a few days ago at the end of a season 4 which did not really answer all the questions. So what to understand?
Why did the plane disappear?
We have understood over the episodes that the passengers of flight 828 have been chosen to carry out a mission. If we bet on a supernatural reason – à la Lost – to understand the why and how, the creator of Manifest linked his series to religion. In an interview given in 2022, he made these interesting revelations:
“We are now discovering that the passengers are prophets. We alluded to it from the start. The choices they make to redeem themselves, follow the callings, and do good things impact not only their own ability to live or die, but the fate of all humanity. We allude to the fact that, from time to time, throughout human history, God has delegated a representative or group of representatives to determine if humanity is still viable: Will this population that I created deserves to continue, or did they screw it up?”
What do the different prophets over time have in common? The sapphire. We found him on Al Zuras’ boat, on Noah’s ark… According to the series, they too were chosen by divine consciousness.
Why are some dead?
The survivors realize through their research that it is not only their lives that are at stake but also the fate of humanity. To be able to save their canoe and the rest of the planet, they will have to do good deeds. But not only. Olive discovers in the last episode that their heart is not judged by the good and the bad they do, but also by their ability to forgive. This is how Ben escapes death by saving Angelina from dying.
The young woman – and ten other passengers – will not survive the Final Judgment for this reason. Although the passengers generally passed the test, they did not repent. Unlike Saanvi, who killed the Major, but spent the last five years trying to find a solution to the death date.
Why was Cal chosen by divine consciousness?
The show hasn’t really answered that question, but we can indulge in a theory or two. The most probable is that the young boy was in direct contact with the white light in the plane. He looked her directly in the eye and may have been deemed worthy to carry out the divine mission.
On the other hand, we do not know the reason why Angelina was also able to have access to the powers of the sapphire, but there must be an antagonist in each story…
