Many successes harvested – the year ends with a “flourishing record”

Blue-yellow turns green: with the “Nature in the garden” campaign, the state has been setting many ecological accents for years, offering hobby gardeners advice and help – and awards green oases with the coveted hedgehog badge. Most recently, the initiative was able to look forward to a very special record this year!

For the environmental experts, “Nature in the Garden” in 2021 was all about the flowering meadow: This natural habitat offers food and refuge for wild bees and many other beneficial insects, and is therefore a contribution to biodiversity – and also beautiful to look at. “We wanted to make Lower Austria the number 1 ecological garden region,” said Provincial Councilor Martin Eichtinger, explaining the goal. The plan worked like a well-tended flower seed: On the initiative of “Nature in the Garden”, 1.68 square meters – one for every citizen of the state – were planted on flowering meadows in Lower Austria gardeners as well as all institutions and supporters who care about environmental, species and climate protection right on their own doorstep ”, emphasizes Johanna Mikl-Leitner. The governor also refers to the high level of private commitment in the state: The state’s eco-badge can now be found in more than 18,000 gardens. It was not until the summer that she and Eichtinger were able to hand over the anniversary hedgehog seal to Vera and Margit Rudorfer from Unterwölbling in the St. Pölten district. 2022 will be the year of the tree 167 companies on board that are committed to sustainable development and preferably organic products. The campaign is meanwhile also active in all other federal states and even beyond the borders of Austria. Most recently, the first partners were won in Germany. A core area of ​​“Nature in the Garden” is also advice on the Internet, at workshops and with its own hotline: in 2021, more than 42,000 hobby gardeners obtained important tips for their own green oasis.
