The Ministry of the Interior has just unveiled the results of the presidential election projected at the level of the legislative constituency. In total, Macron won 27.84% of the vote, against 23.15% for Le Pen and 21.95% for Mélenchon. The outgoing president came first in 53 departments, against 42 for Le Pen and 12 for Mélenchon.

By reducing these results to the 577 legislative constituencies, Macron would have come first in 256 constituencies, against 206 for Le Pen and 104 for Mélenchon, mainly in large cities.

Cartogram instructions for use

Click on the candidate in the top menu to see their vote level on the map. Thanks to the button bar under the map, you can switch between the two display modes by territory or by population and also vary the zoom level of the regions and departments. Finally, a click on a geographical area displays the detailed result.

To represent the result of an election, the geographical map can be misleading because it is not hectares that vote, but citizens. That is why Release has chosen to add the cartogram which makes it possible to display the population corresponding to each administrative subdivision by proportional circles.

The geographical size of department 75, for example, is tiny, but its population is very large. Conversely, Lozère is a large, sparsely populated department. The advantage of the cartogram is to respect the geographical position of the territory while highlighting the voters.
