Marathon: Bungie unveils its next game, a PvP extraction shooter resurrecting its sci-fi license

Bungie was present in force during the Playstation Showcasewith on one side a teaser for Destiny 2: Final Form bringing back Cayde-6 and on the other a very first trailer for an almost secret game the studio is working on, Marathon. Yes, “almost”, because the rumors had already passed by at the end of last year. In case you don’t know the studio’s past, this is one of its old licenses forming a trilogy whose games were released in 1994, 1995 and 1996 on computers, available for free here for the curious. This Marathon new generation will take the form ofan extractive shooter pvp for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, which will offer cross play and cross-platform backups. During the event, a simple cinematic teaser was shared, serving to introduce its universe and its well-marked artistic direction.

Here is a summary of what the game will offer:

This PvP extraction shooter takes place on the mysterious planet Tau Ceti IV. In Marathon, players will take control Runners, cybernetic mercenaries designed to survive the harsh environment of the planet, and will have to explore the lost colony that once occupied the surface of Tau Ceti. Players can start solo or in groups of three in search of mysterious artifactsbut also loot, new weapons and equipment that they can add to their collection.

THE CEO of the studio and those responsible for the project obviously commented on the announcement:

“Marathon is the start of an incredible journey for Bungie, one that builds on our studio’s storied history and pushes us into the future,” said Marathon General Manager Scott Taylor. “We’ve learned many lessons after thirty years of creating unique worlds and innovative PvP experiences, and we’re now bringing them to this game that’s unlike anything Bungie has ever produced, its graphics, sounds and style of play.”

“Even at this stage of development, it’s amazing to see the creativity and excitement around this game at Bungie,” he said. Marathon Game Director Christopher Barrett. “Our team is dedicated to creating a PvP-centric gaming experience, with plenty of tension and excitement, and based in a dynamic and rich online world where player actions will have consequences for each new season. »

“This is an important moment for Bungie, as we continue to evolve into a multi-game studio “, announces the CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons. “Over thirty years of passion for creating amazing games has brought us here and guides us into the future. We still have a lot of work to do, whether it’s bringing together the development team for Marathon or supporting Destiny in the years to come. We’re working with our partners at PlayStation to make our vision of Bungie as an entertainment-rich studio a reality. Of course, we don’t forget our main mission: to create worlds that inspire friendship. »

But it didn’t stop there, because A AR as knows so well the studio then starteda whole bunch of elements being present in this video and outside, including an account Twitter @We_Are_Midaa weapon name known to players of destiny and which originates from Marathon. This treasure hunt led to the broadcast of a ViDoc titled “Somewhere in Heaven” explaining the team’s vision. So there will be a season system with environmental narrative through a map persistent, where community actions can unlock new areas for all players. The ways of playing are described as varied, even if it is still quite abstract. What is certain is that we now know where the members of the team have gone pvp who previously worked on Destiny 2. Besides, Marathon will have dedicated servers.

Marathon is currently heading into its alpha so the team will be focusing on development rather than communication soon, but when it does return it will be with some gameplay.
