  • Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum has died in a traffic accident in his home country of Kenya.
  • The long-distance runner was 24 years old.
  • His trainer was also killed in the accident.

Kenyan media reported the death, citing police and the family. According to initial information, there were three passengers in the accident car that left the road in Kaptaget in the southwestern highlands of Kenya, including Kiptum and his trainer. According to police, the third person was taken to the hospital, news agencies reported.

Kiptum won the Chicago Marathon a good four months ago in a world record time of 2:00:35 hours. He improved Eliud Kipchoge’s previous record by 34 seconds and became the first person to run an official marathon under 2:01:00 hours.

World Athletics Association President Sebastian Coe said he was “shocked and deeply sad.” “An incredible athlete leaves an incredible legacy, we will miss him very much,” wrote the Brit on X.
