RB Leipzig uses itself again in Salzburg

Julian Nagelsmann’s successor has been clarified: As expected, Jesse Marsch will be the new coach of Bundesliga soccer club RB Leipzig. The 47-year-old American is coming to RB Salzburg for the new season and will receive a contract with the Saxons until 2023.

Bundesliga club RB Leipzig quickly found what they were looking for in the search for a successor to coach Julian Nagelsmann. Two days after the 33-year-old announced the move to FC Bayern, Leipzig and Jesse Marsch agreed on a collaboration. The 47-year-old American comes from sister club Red Bull Salzburg and was considered a favorite for the post. In Leipzig, Marsch receives a two-year contract until June 2023.

“With Jesse Marsch, we were able to sign our dream candidate as the new head coach and fill the most important position in the sporting field at RB Leipzig with a top coach,” said managing director Oliver Mintzlaff. The agreement between Leipzig and Salzburg was considered a formality due to the proximity of both clubs. Marsch will probably not switch to the Saxons for free. According to the “Mitteldeutscher Zeitung”, Leipzig is transferring a low seven-digit amount to Salzburg. The club is reinvesting part of the up to 25 million euros for Nagelsmann.

Marsch already worked as assistant coach to Ralf Rangnick in Leipzig in the 2018/19 season. He had previously worked as a trainer for New York Red Bulls in the RB cosmos. Marsch’s past in Leipzig was “of course a big advantage,” said Mintzlaff: “Jesse knows the club, the city of Leipzig and above all our club and game philosophy. In addition to his qualities as a coach, Jesse is characterized above all by his positive and ambitious manner which he can extremely inspire people in and around the club and take with him. “

Salzburg have also reacted quickly: The former Hoffenheim Bundesliga professional Matthias Jaissle will succeed Marsch. The 33-year-old Swabian comes from the FC Liefering farm team and signs a two-year contract until 2023.
