Margot Robbie: That’s how she ticks privately

Like the “Barbie” actress Margot Robbie manages to be herself in real life despite her tremendous success in Hollywood.

Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Chanel, Prada and, and, and. The list of designer labels that Margot Robbie, 33, has worn in recent weeks is long. After all, chic – and of course mostly pink – outfits were in demand at the press tour for her film “Barbie”. In addition, valuable jewellery, make-up and perfectly styled hair. Quite a Hollywood diva.

Away from the red carpets and spotlights, however, Margot Robbie is anything but glamorous. She swaps her evening gown for a casual look or prefers to put on her wetsuit right away to let off steam on the surfboard in the water.

Margot Robbie: Her childhood in Australia

Luxury? don’t mean anything to her Of course, it’s easy to say that when you have millions in your bank account, but her down-to-earth attitude seems believable. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that she grew up on her grandparents’ farm near Australia’s Gold Coast, where she was happy if she could hunt wild boar, as she once said. As a child, Margot dreamed of becoming an ice hockey player. It then became field hockey as a hobby.

Her other great passion, acting, took her first to television – she starred in the Australian soap opera Neighbors – then to film. In 2011 she moved to Los Angeles. Here, too, she was able to quickly gain a foothold thanks to her natural nature and inexperience. Don’t think too much about what you’re doing, just do it, that’s Robbie’s motto.

She slapped Leonardo DiCaprio in the face

It is also an affect act that gave her her first major Hollywood role in 2013: During the casting for “The Wolf of Wall Street” she spontaneously slapped the main actor Leonardo DiCaprio instead of kissing him as scripted. The crew is flabbergasted, then impressed – and Robbie gets the job. After that she played in blockbusters like “Once Upon A Time in … Hollywood”, “The Suicide Squad” or “Asteroid City”. And now she’s playing a Barbie doll the world hasn’t seen before.

A gigantic career. But despite her incredible success, Margot Robbie never loses touch with reality and keeps her roots firmly in sight. She regularly spends time with her family in Australia, far away from the film circus. Until recently, Margot shared a flat with friends, now she shares a house with her husband Tom Ackerley in Venice Beach, California. When she travels, Robbie prefers to travel with a backpack and stay in youth hostels. “I just love staying in a room with twenty people and exchanging travel stories. It’s much more interesting than the tips from the concierge of a luxury hotel,” she says. No trace of airs and graces.

“Everyone would like to work with this woman.”

It’s not just the fans, but also well received in the industry. “Robbie doesn’t take himself too seriously, that makes her very personable,” a source told GALA. “She immediately stands out in a shark tank full of egos.” No wonder everyone wants to work with this woman. In her very own way, she combines a modern mixture of sensitivity, courage, self-confidence and feminism.

In addition, Robbie is committed to ensuring that actresses receive the same salary as their often better-paid male colleagues. And now that all of Hollywood is on strike for better pay, she too is flying the flag. Margot Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling, who embodies Barbie’s boyfriend Ken in the film, stayed away from the Berlin premiere of “Barbie” out of solidarity with their colleagues.

This film rivals “Barbie”.

The absence of the leading actors will hardly affect the success of the film by director Greta Gerwig. It is more critical that another film is showing in cinemas at the same time as “Barbie”: “Oppenheimer”, the new work by star producer Christopher Nolan. Dark drama versus gaudy comedy – how will this competition end? Margot Robbie isn’t bothered by that. On the contrary: she demonstratively bought a ticket for “Oppenheimer”.
