Old school haute couture
There’s no other way to say it: The Oscars are the night of vintage dresses this year. Both Anya Taylor-Joy and Carey Mulligan choose old haute couture looks that were specially tailored for Oscar night. Anya’s dress in a mermaid look is a homage to the Venus dress by Christian Dior from 1949. The design of the replica was very similar to the original, but is characterized by smaller decorative elements and a narrower skirt. Carey Mulligan, on the other hand, chooses a dress that focuses on the date it was created. Cristóbal Balenciaga’s iconic black and white mermaid dress was introduced in 1951, the same year Leonard Bernstein married his partner Felicia Montealegre. Carey Mulligan is nominated for an Oscar for the film “Maestro,” in which she portrays Felicia Montealegre.
