At the end of the 1970s, Maria Mendiola enjoyed great success with the disco duo Baccara. Now she has died at the age of 69.

With hits like “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie”, Maria Mendiola (1952-2021) and Mayte Mateos (70) celebrated sensational success in the late 1970s. The disco duo called Baccara split up in 1982 and later appeared with various new partners as Baccara and New Baccara.

Maria Mendiola has now died at the age of 69. That announced her new singing partner Cristina Sevilla on the duo’s official Instagram page. She did not disclose a cause of death.

“How difficult it is for me to publish that,” wrote the singer there on Saturday (9/11). “My dear Maria, a wonderful artist, but above all for me … My friend, left us today.” The two formed the duo since 2009 and most recently released the album “I Belong To Your Heart” in 2017.

Career start with television ballet

Maria Mendiola’s career began in the early 1970s with the Spanish television ballet. There she met her colleague Mayte Mateos, who first set up their own dance and singing duo Venus and later renamed themselves Baccarat.
