The Nobel Peace Prize goes to two journalists. Maria Ressa and Dmitrij Muratow are honored for their commitment to freedom of expression.

The Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 will go to two people: the journalists Maria Ressa (58) and Dmitrij Muratow (59) will be honored for their commitment to freedom of expression. The Norwegian committee gave this on theirs, among other things official Twitter account known.

“Freedom of expression is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace,” the tweet said. The Russian journalist Dmitrij Muratow has been campaigning for more freedom of the press in his home country for years. His Filipino colleague Ressa “uses freedom of expression to expose abuse of power, violence and growing authoritarianism in her home country, the Philippines”, it says in a statement by the committee. They would represent all journalists “who advocate this ideal”. Last year the award went to the United Nations World Food Program.

Two Germans among the Nobel Prize winners

This week the winners in the categories medicine, physics, chemistry and literature were announced. Two Germans could look forward to an award: meteorologist Klaus Hasselmann received the Nobel Prize in physics and Benjamin List in chemistry. The prize is endowed with ten million Swedish kronor (around 985,000 euros).
