On October 22, 2021, Florian Varin was sentenced by the Assize Court of Appeal of Tarn-et-Garonne to 28 years in prison. This was decided during a third trial against him for attempted murder and six rapes committed in 2012.
Florian Varin had been accused of six rapes, committed between December 2011 and November 2012, in particular in Rennes, Niort and Toulouse. At first instance, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. A sentence which had been confirmed on appeal in 2018 in Albi, in the south-west of France. Attorney General David Senate had asked for 30 years in prison, in addition to a 22-year security period.
But on October 22, 2021, Florian Varin was sentenced by the Assize Court of Appeal of Tarn-et-Garonne to 28 years in prison during a third trial, in addition to a security period of 18 years and a socio-judicial follow-up of 10 years. This final decision is thus less severe than that requested by Advocate General David Senate. The defendant admitted to the six rapes committed between December 2011 and November 2012, of which he was accused, but has always denied the attempted murder of his last victim in Toulouse.
Marie Le Vacon “Even today, I have trouble showering”
In 2021, almost 10 years after the events she suffered, Marie Le Vacon, the victim of the serial rapist for whom he was accused of attempted murder, spoke and testified for Le Figaro. The young woman said she was still traumatized, psychologically but also physically. The latter woke up on November 4, 2012 in a garbage container. Florian Varin had thrown her there after raping her, thinking of getting rid of her body: “He thought I was dead and thought he had carefully hidden my body. I try to get out of the container. It’s super high. I don’t know how, I manage to get out. I take a few steps, hampered by my tights lowered to mid-thigh. I feel a lump in my tights: it’s my panties. I lower my dress which is up to my stomach and I go up to the second floor, at my friend’s house”she testified in 2021 for Le Figaro.
The young woman also spoke of her trauma, still very present, which influences her daily life: “I felt like a 9-year-old girl. It was my mother who, when I arrived in Toulouse in an emergency, washed me. Even today, I have trouble showering and he m it’s impossible to go and throw the trash. Touching a garbage bag also triggers vomiting reflexes“she explained.
