It is Saturday evening, May 28, 2016. In the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, the final of the Champions League between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is going to the penalty shootout. Los Blancos show their better nerves – and win the 11th title in their glorious club history.
Final referee Mark Clattenburg (now 46) is also responsible for the fact that the penalty shoot-out is at all, as he now tells in a podcast.
Highly explosive statements
The top referee at the time – he was one of the best referees in the world until his retirement in 2019 – is now admitting in explosive statements that he deliberately whistled a penalty for Atletico in the 2016 final to make up for an earlier mistake!
Clattenburg: “I knew Bale had touched the ball in the middle, which made it easier for Ramos to make it 1-0 from offside. I then asked my assistant if there was that contact after the free kick. He was completely paralyzed. “
“I was very confused”
The Englishman continued: “We had no technology and I had to open the game again. When I was finally able to communicate with the assistant again, he told me that the microphone and headphones were not working. I was very confused. It was a very difficult decision. “
He knew he had made a serious mistake. The Ramos goal for Real Madrid shouldn’t have counted. And so he immediately points to the penalty point in a duel between Atleticos Fernando Torres and Reals Pepe to make up for his alleged mistake.
“Penalty as it restored the balance”
He explains: “I was very lucky because I got one of those 50:50 penalties. Torres was clear in front of Pepe – and there was a foul. Was it really a foul? It’s very subjective. I gave the 911 because it restored the balance. Real had already had their chance with the offside goal. “
This decision gave him a queasy feeling. And so he was really happy when Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann subsequently failed with a free-standing shot against the crossbar.
“These statements are a shame!”
Clattenburg: “When Griezmann shot and hit the crossbar, I thought, ‘Wow, this is my day.’ It’s a perfect day for a referee. Atletico had the chance to level the offside goal and they left it out. If you want to blame me now, you can’t, because Griezmann had the penalty chance. “
Clattenburg’s statements make waves. In Spain, the former referee Alfonso Pérez Burrull (56) is massive. He says in the “Marca”: “This is completely surreal! It’s a shame to hear things like that because it goes against anything a referee is all about. A good referee has to shoulder mistakes. You can’t make up for it with another mistake. ” (wst)
