Mark Zuckerberg bets more on WhatsApp and Messenger than the metaverse to boost Meta growth

Mark Zuckerberg changes (slightly) his tune. While the boss of Meta has been insisting since last year that the future of his company is being played out in the metaverse, he is also placing great hopes in WhatsApp and Messenger. Indeed, the American multi-billionaire let his employees know that the two messaging applications would stimulate the next round of sales growth for the Menlo Park firm, according to Reuters.

During a question-and-answer session with Meta collaborators, Mark Zuckerberg considered that WhatsApp and Messenger are applications “very advanced in monetization” compared to the group’s two advertising pillars, Facebook and Instagram. “We talk a lot about very long-term opportunities like the metaverse, but the reality is that enterprise messaging will likely be the next major pillar of our business as we work to further monetize WhatsApp and Messenger”he said in comments reported by Reuters.

In recent years, Meta has rolled out new tools to attract more businesses to WhatsApp. Last May, the company notably announced the launch of a cloud API aimed at making WhatsApp accessible to all businesses, unlike the WhatsApp Business API, which until then had been reserved for medium and large businesses and aimed to simplify interactions with their customers. Apart from this new API, Meta has also unveiled a paid version of its WhatsApp Business application offering additional features. A way for the American giant to attract a growing number of companies and isolate them in its ecosystem to push them to increase their spending on its platforms, in particular WhatsApp, an application bought in 2014 for 22 billion dollars.

Mark Zuckerberg’s comments on WhatsApp and Messenger reflect a change in tone from the boss of Meta. And for good reason, a week after the announcement of the dismissal of 11,000 employees of the group, the leader must bring back a semblance of serenity in the company to reassure its workforce, but also its investors, who have not ceased to sanction Meta on Wall Street since the beginning of the year.

Indeed, the company’s colossal investments in the metaverse are raising serious concerns among investors, already alarmed by the company’s struggles in the advertising market and its ability to fight off competition from TikTok. For two years, Meta, via its subsidiary Reality Labs, has squandered 20.9 billion euros to build its virtual world, including 3.7 billion during the third quarter. As a result, the company’s cash, which posted $ 12.4 billion in the last quarter of 2021, melted like snow in the sun, with $ 4 billion evaporated each quarter.

In front of his employees, Mark Zuckerberg thus sought to minimize Meta’s expenses in Reality Labs, but the damage has already been done. For the time being, these investments are not bearing fruit, since the Horizon Worlds platform, the first draft of its metaverse, has less than 200,000 monthly active users, instead of the 500,000 initially expected by the end of the year. . If the American leader does not intend to give up propelling his company into the metaverse, he has however reviewed his immediate priorities to try to stop the bleeding. It will therefore be up to WhatsApp and Messenger to play the antidotes to stop this infernal spiral, and put Meta back on the rails of growth.
