Meta is laying off 11,000 people, or 13% of its workforce. This was announced by Mark Zuckerberg in a message to employees made public by press release. Remember that this mass dismissal was anticipated.

The businessman, who recently presented the ambitious Meta Quest Pro, says he wants to “take responsibility for their decisions and how we got here“. “I know this is difficult for everyone, and I am especially sorry for those affected.“, he confides in addition.

” I was mistaken “

In his message, Mark Zuckerberg delivers some explanations.

At the onset of Covid, the world quickly turned to the internet and the rise of e-commerce led to outsized revenue growth. Many people predicted that it would be a permanent acceleration that would continue even after the pandemic was over. I did the same, and so I made the decision to significantly increase our investments. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as I had planned. Not only has e-commerce returned to earlier trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and loss of advertising has caused our revenue to be much lower than I had anticipated. I was wrong, and I take responsibility for it.

The boss of Meta then explains that he wants to concentrate his group’s efforts on the highest priority activities, in particular around artificial intelligence, advertising and the long-term vision of the metaverse (called metaverse by the company).

He also details several actions taken to limit the company’s expenses, but specifies that this was not enough and that he had to resign himself to laying off 11,000 people.

Meta promises support for those made redundant

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger also ensures that it will take the necessary measures to provide all the necessary information to the employees concerned.

To give an idea, Mark Zuckerberg gives some details on this process of dismissal of Meta in the United States. He thus promises severance pay (at least 16 weeks of salary), reimbursement of paid leave not taken, coverage of health care costs (6 months), three-month support to find work or even administrative assistance for immigrant workers requiring a visa.

Finally Mark Zuckerberg says to himself “grateful“towards those who leave the company”for all they have done to advance our mission“.
