After Facebook, it is Mark Zuckerberg himself who will have to respond to American justice following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

If Meta thought the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica case was now behind it, the company was mistaken. Its CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally sued by Karl Racine, the attorney general of Washington DC.

Mark Zuckerberg complicit in Cambridge Analytica abuses

Mark Zuckerberg is accused of deception and violation of US consumer protection laws. In the subpoena document filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, the prosecutor believes that the boss of what was the Facebook group at the time (now Meta) “ is largely responsible for the vision of its platform which required […] to expose the personal data consumers “.

According to Karl Racine, the manager is ” directly responsible for Facebook’s lax enforcement of its policies “. He assures that Mark Zuckerberg was ” aware of the compromise which allowed Cambridge Analytica to illegally exploit users’ personal information, which Facebook benefited from through increased revenue from targeted advertising.

Trump’s election embroiled in scandal

When the scandal broke, Mark Zuckerberg was forced to testify before the United States Congress to explain himself. But his answers had been poor in revelations and each time dodged all the sensitive subjects. The CEO blamed Cambridge Analytica for unilaterally violating Facebook’s terms of service.

This is the second time that Mark Zuckerberg has been personally targeted by a legal complaint. However, last March, the Superior Court of DC finally refused the request of the prosecution to call Mark Zuckerberg as a witness in the context of legal proceedings which this time targeted Facebook.

Cambridge Analytica is accused of collecting and exploiting the personal data of 87 million Facebook users. The company had collaborated with Donald Trump’s teams during the 2016 presidential election, which resulted in his victory. Already wavering, confidence in the social network had taken a big hit.
