Market: Cnil sanctions Criteo with a fine of 40 million euros


PARIS (Reuters) – Criteo, a French specialist in targeted online advertising, has been fined 40 million euros for shortcomings in the processing of users’ personal data, the National Commission for Computing and Information Technology announced on Thursday. freedoms (CNIL).

“On June 15, 2023, the Cnil sanctioned the company Criteo (…) with a fine of 40 million euros, in particular for not having verified that the people whose data it processes had given their consent”, declares the Cnil in a press release.

The company, based in Paris but listed in New York, collects browsing data from Internet users using its cookie (“cookie”) located on partner websites to determine their habits, in order to send them targeted advertisements.

The Cnil sanctions in particular a breach of the obligation of information and transparency or of the right to withdraw consent and the deletion of its data.

In a statement, Criteo said it intends to appeal this decision to the competent legal authorities.

“(…) we consider that the allegations made by the CNIL do not involve any risk for people, nor damage caused to them”, says Criteo, which adds to rely “only on pseudonymised data, not directly identifying and non-sensitive in the context of its activities”.
