ABU DHABI (Reuters) – German energy group RWE announced on Sunday that it has signed an agreement with the Emirati group ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) to supply Germany with liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the end of December.
Germany, very dependent until now on Russian gas, has been trying since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to diversify its energy supplies.
This announcement by RWE as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz makes a two-day trip to the Gulf region to find alternative energy resources.
“We need to make sure that the production of LNG in the world is sufficiently advanced so that the high demand that exists can be met without having to resort to Russian production capacity,” Olaf Scholz told reporters before the press release. agreement between RWE and ADNOC is announced.
RWE said the LNG delivery will be 137,000 cubic meters and will be the first to be supplied to a floating LNG import terminal at Brunsbuettel near Hamburg.
“This is an important step in the construction of an LNG supply infrastructure in Germany and in the establishment of a more diversified gas supply”, underlines RWE in a press release.
The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, has signed an agreement with Olaf Scholz to accelerate energy security and industrial growth.
According to the WAM news agency, ADNOC has also reserved an unspecified number of LNG shipments for Germany in 2023.
