PARIS (Reuters) – The Council of State asked the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority (Arcom) on Tuesday to once again monitor CNews’ respect for pluralism and the independence of information, after a appeal by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
The NGO seized the Council of State in 2022 to challenge in particular Arcom’s refusal “to act against CNews’ failures to fulfill its obligations”, accusing the news channel of continuing to fail to respect independence. , pluralism and honesty of information.
“Requested by the Reporters Without Borders association, the Council of State judges that (…) Arcom must take into account the diversity of currents of thought and opinions represented by all the participants in the programs broadcast ( …) and not only the intervention time of political figures”, indicates the council in a press release.
The Council therefore ordered Arcom to re-examine within six months the compliance by the CNews channel with its obligations.
RSF welcomed in a press release a “historic decision for the independence and pluralism of information”.
For its part, Arcom took note and confirmed that it would re-examine RSF’s appeal and take into account “the interventions of all participants in the programs broadcast, including columnists, hosts and guests”.
