For some time, the preferred social network of adolescents has been the subject of controversy. A hashtag, #balancetontiktokeur appeared: many internet users, mostly young women, said they were the victims of harassment on Twitter. Harassment, threats, requests for naked photos … All these testimonies did not go unnoticed by Marlene Schiappa, the secretary of state for equality between women and men. She confided in the HuffingtonPost and did not mince words: "I saw that TikTok did not react, I said to myself voir you have to see them and shake them." The alert was given, and despite some difficulties on the communications side, Tik Tok accepted the appointment with the secretary of state. According to her, the managers of the social network wanted, at the beginning, to organize a meeting in video and in English, which Marlene Schiappa categorically refused.

In addition, the secretary of state deplores Tik Tok's lack of responsiveness to the mass harassment that is perceived on the social network: "I asked them what they faced with these thousands of testimonies: they did nothing. I ask them to ban the accused persons in a preventive way, as did Twitch and to put the victims in contact with justice or associations " does she still tell the HuffingtonPost.

Tik Tok would have argued his lack of reaction by the fact that it is impossible for the social network to react to the harassment that happens outside of the platform: "If on our platform a user breaks the rules, he will be suspended, but on another messaging service, no"

Marlene Schiappa also regrets that the ban on children under 13 is not respected: "They don't ask for an identity card, it's a checkbox." It therefore expects concrete guarantees and this will no doubt be one of the measures it will claim from Tik Tok. She adds: "The question for them as a business is, 'Are they a safe space?' To get there, you have to take these steps. Today is the jungle. Do nothing , It is not possible."
