Marrakech 2022: Tilda Swinton, the “David Bowie of cinema”, honored at the festival

After being president of the jury of the Marrakech Film Festival in 2019, Tilda Swinton was honored at the closing ceremony of the 19th edition of the festival.

Back after two years of absence due to the pandemic, the Marrakech film festival celebrated cinema from November 11 to 19. For its 19th edition, this festival bet on exceptional previews, masterclasses and meetings but also a competition, whose programming was based on first and second feature films by directors from all over the world.

In addition, the Marrakech film festival also paid tribute to the careers of big names in the film industry with, in particular, a program of films to (re)discover the works of the personalities honored. Among the honored stars, we find James Gray, Farida Benlyazid and Ranveer Singh, but also Tilda Swinton for the closing ceremony.

Tilda Swinton honored in Marrakech

President of the jury at the Marrakech film festival in 2019, the actress returned with pleasure to present the film The Eternal Daughter, her latest collaboration with Joanna Hogg, scheduled for cinema in France on March 22, 2023. And she also receives an award d’honneur, presented by Ruben Östlund, recently crowned with the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his film Sans Filtre.

For the Swedish director, Tilda Swinton is the “David Bowie of Cinema”. He was full of praise for the actress’ career and her fruitful collaborations with renowned filmmakers. Ruben Östlund has also appealed to Tilda Swinton and wants to be on the list of directors with whom she has worked.

After long applause, the Oscar-winning actress thanked the festival and the directors who made it turn. Tilda Swinton also proclaimed her love for cinema and what it represents:

“Cinema shows us who we are, in our great diversity. It reflects our desires, our failures, our triumphs and our dreams. Long live cinema and long live difference!”

And surprised! It was her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne, with whom she recently co-starred in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part I & Part II, who came to present her with her award. Tilda Swinton, who was not expecting the arrival of her daughter, was very moved by this moment of sharing.

The Marrakech Film Festival will return for a 20th edition from November 24 to December 2, 2023.
