Marriage, birth… Announce your good news to improve your withholding tax

Bercy is launching a major communication campaign on Monday to encourage the French to declare changes in their lives (birth, marriage, retirement, etc.) in order to adjust their withholding tax at source.

Marriage, PACS, arrival of a child or unemployment. For both good and bad news, our loved ones are often made aware. In an advertising campaign launched on Monday, the Directorate General of Public Finances (DGFiP) asks the French to also share these moments with it.

Better not wait

And that for a good reason: all these changes in your life can influence your rate of deduction at source and affect the amount of your tax. Indeed, if the withholding tax varies automatically according to your income, the rate remains unchanged until your next declaration the following year. Therefore, you can ask to recalculate it and match it to your new situation: additional half-share for the arrival of a child, joint declaration for marriages or civil unions, delivered to the DGFiP at Good public.

Bercy thus gives the following example: In 2021, less than 245,000 births were declared in real time to manage its withholding at source, for 738,000 births recorded over the year. Gold, an additional half-share declared is necessarily synonymous with a reduction of your tax. For Bercy, it is better to avoid waiting to be reimbursed for a too high levy which could be useful to you.

To make the French aware of this issue, the DGFiP is therefore launching a major summer campaign with posters and supporting videos.

Taxes 2022: when will you receive the transfer from the DGFiP to reimburse the overpayment?

In the event of a promotion or a significant increase in income, it is still better to let it be known fairly quickly, otherwise there will be a bad surprise. Those who have a promotion, with a significant salary increase, or self-employed entrepreneurs who experience a significant increase in their activity may have to pay more, explains the DGFiP quoted by The Parisian. But better to take the lead so as not to have a painful pay out of the summer.
