The Thurgau regional church has shown itself to be progressive by joining the “Alliance Equally Catholic”.

The Catholic regional church of Thurgau is the first in Switzerland to join the “Alliance Equally Catholic”. The Synod Thurgau – the church parliament – decided unanimously. The alliance was founded in Lucerne in 2021. It sees itself as a reform Catholic organization committed to gender equality, more transparency and democracy in the church.

The President of the Thurgau Synod, Thomas Merz: “This alliance also wants to work for people who are from the LGBTQ spectrum. That these people have the same dignity within the church, that these ways of life are taken seriously.”

10,000 francs of support per year

He is happy about the decision, says Thomas Merz. Above all, that it was adopted unanimously. After all, the equality of men and women in all church offices and tasks is also in the constitution of the Catholic regional church in Thurgau.

It is our hope that this will be possible in a realistic time.

The synod stipulated that 10,000 francs per year go to the “Alliance Equally Catholic”. And even if the Catholic regional church of Thurgau cannot decide for itself, the goal is clear: women should also become priests and homosexual couples should be allowed to marry.

When is it?

“It is our hope that this will be possible in a realistic time,” says Thomas Merz, President of the Thurgau Synod. According to the announcement, the commitment of the Catholic regional church should not be “an alibi exercise”. Joining the alliance is an important step.

However, it is unclear when the progressive steps will be possible. The Thurgau Church belongs to the diocese of Basel.
