However, this rate penalizes the spouse who earns the least well in the household, and unfortunately this is often women. “Women in a relationship receive an annual income 42% lower than that of their partner”, recalls MP Marie-Pierre Rixain. And 8 out of 10 women receive lower income than their spouse. They therefore find themselves paying a disproportionate income tax.

Fairer taxation for married or civil partnership women

The government therefore wishes to remedy this problem by establishing the individualized rate by default. This new measure was adopted Wednesday October 11, by the Finance Committee. Concretely, the personalized rate will come into force from September 1st. And married or civil partnership women will now be levied based on their own income and no longer that of the tax household.

However, couples who wish maintain the tax household rate will always be able to do so. Note that the personalized rate already existed but was not applied by default. But thanks to this new measure, it will now be. According to the latest data from the tax administration, more than 500,000 households opt for this individualized option each year.
