Acclaimed British writer Martin Amis is dead. He died at the age of 73 from complications from cancer.
Martin Amis, one of the most famous British writers of his generation, has died at the age of 73. He died of esophageal cancer at his home in Florida. reported the “New York Times” citing his wife, the writer Isabel Fonseca (62).
Amis is best known for his 1984 novel Greedy and the 1989 work London Fields. He wrote 15 novels and several non-fiction books and was considered one of the most influential writers of his time. He was one of an acclaimed group of authors such as Salman Rushdie (75), Ian McEwan (74) and Julian Barnes (77) whose works shaped the British literary scene in the 1980s.
“We have the shelf”
Salman Rushdie paid tribute to Americans in the “New Yorker”: “He always said that he wanted to leave behind a shelf full of books – to be able to say: ‘From here to here it’s me’.” He added: “His voice is muted now. His friends will miss him terribly. But we have the shelf.”
Martin Amis has often been described as the Mick Jagger (79) of the literary world. Carrie Bradshaw read his novels in the cult series “Sex in the City”. The writer has married twice: in 1984 he gave the vows to the American philosophy professor Antonia Phillips, with whom he had two sons. After the couple’s divorce, Amis married Isabel Fonseca in 1998. With her he had two daughters. He has another daughter from a relationship in the 1970s.
