Martin Scorsese is expected to shoot a documentary about shipwrecks this summer. He is reportedly traveling to his grandparents’ hometown for the film.

A planned documentary film apparently allows Martin Scorsese (81) to travel to the homeland of his grandparents. According to a report According to the US industry magazine “Variety”, the documentary takes him to the Sicilian town of Polizzi Generosa – the place where his father’s parents were born.

Scorsese’s documentary will be shot in several Sicilian locations

The documentary is not about the small town itself, but about old shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. The project, which is not yet named, is based on the work of underwater archaeologist Lisa Briggs. According to several sources, filming for the upcoming movie is set to begin this summer.

Filming will take place in Sicily at locations on land and water – including in the Strait of Sicily, around the port city of Trapani, on the island of Pantelleria and at the Cave di Cusa at the Selinunte archaeological park. Polizzi Generosa will also be mentioned in the film. Scorsese’s grandparents lived here before they emigrated to New York decades ago. The legendary director was born in New York City, in the borough of Queens.

Although Hollywood legend Scorsese is best known for dramatic works such as “Taxi Driver”, “GoodFellas”, “Casino” or most recently “Killers of the Flower Moon”, he has already made several documentaries in the past decades – including “My Italian Journey” from 1999. It is currently unclear whether the new documentary will be released in cinemas or streamed directly.
