Star director Martin Scorsese had the opportunity to speak to Pope Francis in Rome about his planned film project about Jesus.

Hollywood visits the Vatican: Pope Francis (87) received the well-known American director Martin Scorsese (81) for a private audience in the Vatican on Wednesday. Like the Holy See among others announced via Instagram, the two came together for a short private encounter. Scorsese is said to have presented the head of the Catholic Church with, among other things, an illustrated book.

Martin Scorsese is working on a film about Jesus

Photos on Instagram show Pope Francis leafing through them at his desk during the private audience. Scorsese is currently working on a new film about Jesus, it says, among other things, in the comment to the posting.

In January, the 81-year-old had in an interview with the Los Angeles Times announced that he wanted to film the 1973 novel “The Life of Jesus.” He said he wanted to find a way to make religion more accessible and take away its negative connotations. The film should largely take place in the present. Further details are not yet known.

According to media reports, the filmmaker also took part in the Pope’s weekly general audience before the private meeting. He was accompanied by his daughter Francesca (24) and the actress Lily Gladstone (37). She plays one of the main roles in his current film “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio (49) and Robert DeNiro (80).

Scorsese is currently nominated for two Oscars for “Killers of the Flower Moon” – in the “Best Film” category and in the “Best Director” category. It would be the filmmaker’s second golden boy award, following his best director Oscar in 2007 for “Departed.” This year’s Oscars will take place on March 11, 2024.
