Martinique: a prefect in reinforcement to fight against armed violence

Jean-Christophe Bouvier announces the arrival at the beginning of December of a delegate prefect for five months.

The prefect of Martinique Jean-Christophe Bouvier announced on Saturday the arrival at the beginning of December of a delegate prefect to fight against armed violence, which is on the rise on the island.

I will have the support of a prefect who will come for five months to work on issues of security and cooperation between communities, the State and internal security forces.“, told AFP Jean-Christophe Bouvier, who spoke earlier this week in Paris with the Minister of the Interior and Overseas Gérald Darmanin.

The reinforcement of a prefect must make it possible to “improve the territorial surveillance system and improve the fight against all types of crime“, continued the prefect of the region.

Martinique is experiencing a significant increase in acts of violence by firearm. During the night of Thursday to Friday, twenty armed men landed in an evening of several hundred people and triggered a shootout, leaving at least 8 injured, including 6 by bullet.

Since the beginning of the year, Martinique has deplored 25 homicides, including 20 by firearm. In 2019, 25 homicides were recorded, which was a five-year record.

The Minister of the Interior must return to the island before the end of the year to pursue the policy of combating crime.
